How to Get Rid of Moles

If you have mounds of dirt sprawled out like a web in your yard, then you probably have moles. Mole tunneling is destructive to your yard and will destroy your grasses root system. With that being said, it’s time to take back your yard! Here are 4 solutions to try to put an end to the takeover and get rid of moles that plague your yard.

Traps

Traps are a highly effective way to rid your yard of your unwanted guests. There are several considerations to be made when choosing the right trap for you. If you do not wish to kill the captured moles, then be sure to get a live trap. If you would prefer to eliminate the mole completely, then you can either purchase a reusable trap or disposable trap.

Once you’ve selected your trap, the key is to place the trap in an active tunnel. You can identify an active tunnel by searching where tunnels paths cross or by clearing a mound and probing down a few inches. The deeper the tunnel, the more likely it’s the most active tunnel.

Mole Repellents

There are natural ways in which you can ward off moles. One way is to plant a vegetative barrier throughout high traffic areas. Plants such as alliums, daffodils, fritillarias, and marigolds will deter moles. Another natural way to repel moles is to use castor oil. Moles hate the smell of castor oil so any repellent that uses it as a base is a winner. You can create your own repellent by mixing 6 ounces of castor oil and 2 tablespoons of dish soap in a gallon of water. Apply to your lawn and be sure to reapply after it rains.

Attack Their Food Source

Moles are attracted to your yard because it provides them with a bountiful feast of grubs, insects, larvae and earthworms. To get rid of grubs, insects, and larvae you can use an insecticide, or use natural repellents such as milky spore, nematodes or neem oil. By getting rid of their food, you should be able to get rid of moles.

Bait and Switch

There are baits that look and even feel like worms that attract moles. These baits, however, are loaded with a lethal amount of poison and are sure to eliminate moles. These baits should be used with care if you have pets and children that roam your yard.

Don’t be plagued by moles. Give 1 of the 4 solutions a try to end your mole frustrations for good.
