How to perfect your snow plow

Winter has just begun, and you know what that means…snow will be making its way to us eventually. While we’re hoping to have a mild winter, it is still essential to be prepared and have your snow plow ready for that first snowfall. Winter weather, and weather in general, is unexpected, and people’s’ reaction to weather is often unexpected as well. Even Ohioans, who often experience plenty of snow and ice during the winter months, don’t handle snow and ice very well each winter.

How does your city handle snow and ice removal? Some may use garbage trucks; some may have an acceptable amount of snow plows taking shifts throughout the day and night when the snow arrives. For the places expecting snowfall every winter, it is essential to have something lined up so you can be prepared when it does happen. Assume it will snow and plan for it ahead of time.

Next, you have the matter of cutting blades. Some prefer hard rubber or composite plastic blades on their plows because they do less damage to the streets. These blades act as a squeegee on the road. Others prefer traditional steel because it gives them the ability to cut stubborn ice. It is certainly all based on preference. You could have a few snow plows with the hard rubber or plastic blades and a few with traditional steel blades. This could give you an advantage to take on whatever job necessary with each winter storm.

The next problem you’ll need to take on is where to put the snow. The top priority is to clear the roads, but too often, the plowed snow blocks driveways and traps parked cars. This is where it truly becomes an “art”. For big jobs, such as parking lots and heavy snow on roads, you might take in a big snow plow, and for jobs of clearing blocked driveways and trapped cars, you might call a station wagon with a plow attached to the front to take care of the job.

The most important step in the process of snow removal is the planning. It would be smart to ask your weather crew when the snow is expected to arrive, what is the temperature of the road surface, and how much snow will be in which neighborhoods. Knowing answers to these questions will help you get a head start on where to go, how much work it will require, how many people you need to have “on duty” and how long it will take.

We know it can be overwhelming when it comes to winter and snow/ice removal. There is a lot of preparation and planning that needs done before the snow even arrives, but failure to prep and plan for snow could lead to even more stress, so it is important it gets done.
