Maintaining Your Lawn During the Hot, Dry Months

Can we all agree that it is hot, dry and muggy outside? So what does that mean for the care of your lawn? Here are 5 tips to keep in mind when caring for your during the hot, dry months of summer:

Don’t cut too short

It is important to remember to set your mower blades higher during the hot and dry season. Keep your blades high will you help you to avoid scalping your grass which leads to the frying your lawn.

 

Sharpen blades

A dull blade won’t deliver a clean cut and will actually rips the grass, leaving tears which will possibly lead to fungal growth or disease. A sharp blade gives your lawn a chance to heal quicker plus it allows you to work more efficiently because the mower does its job smoother. No bag necessary

Use a mulching kit to return grass clippings back to the lawn. Grass clippings will act as a natural fertilizer as they decompose. Giving your lawn an extra boost during the dry season will help your lawn in the long run.

 

Don’t over water

If you are going to water your lawn be sure to water in the early morning and do not overwater. You will want to water in the early morning to allow enough time for the water to completely penetrate down to the grasses root system and to avoid water evaporation from the hot sun. Additionally, you will want to avoid over watering. During the dry months, it’s best to water less and infrequently; or until the grass is completely dry. Overly wet grass will encourage the spread of lawn disease.

 

Mow when grass is completely dry

Be sure that when you mow, your grass is completely dry. The last thing you want to do is wick away any moisture that your grass has. Wet grass is also a breeding ground for fungus and bacteria. Cutting with wet grass can the spread of lawn disease.

 

Mix up your mowing pattern

Varying your mowing pattern will prevent the grass from growing in the same direction and leaning one way. Mixing up your mowing pattern will encourage straight growth.
