Rolling your yard: should you or shouldn’t you?

Rolling your yard: should you or shouldn’t you? You see your neighbor doing it and may be wondering why and what’s the point? A lawn roller is a useful tool; however, one that should not be used regularly. Rolling your yard is important only after seeding, sodding, or a bad winter. Here are a few examples when a roller should be used:

Seeding

When re-doing your lawn or just establishing a lawn then a lawn roller is the way to go. When using grass seed, the roller can help level the ground and soil. Also, it will help eliminate the clumps of soil. The roller will help the seeds get down into the soil.

SoddingLawn

A roller is useful when laying sod. Once the sod is down a roller will remove air pockets and will help establish the sod roots into the soil.  Then you do not have to use the roller again until next spring if there is a bad winter or if you want to add more grass seed or sod.

After a bad winter

The soil in your yard needs to be pushed down and levelled out – a yard roller is perfect for this job.

If you find that your yard would benefit from being rolled then it is important you do the following:

  1. Spring is the perfect time to roll the lawn because the roots are active for growing
  2. Roll when the ground is damp. DO NOT roll with the ground is soaked or dry. When the lawn is dry it will not work to roll because rolling pushes the seeds into the soil, therefore the ground needs to be damp
  3. Use a light roller (a heavier roller will compact the soil)

Again, rolling your yard should not be done yearly, only when it needs it. This is a practice that should be done with casually and with caution because you can end up damaging your soil.  Make sure you contact or visit Snappy’s Outdoor Equipment for all your lawn care needs.
