When to Rent, When to Buy Lawn Equipment

There was a time when there was only one option and goal for lawn care equipment: To own everything you needed. But what most people don’t know is there is another option: Rental equipment. Of course, for the equipment you use regularly, it makes more sense to purchase, but for those pieces of equipment you only see yourself using once or twice, renting would be the viable option.

Here is our guide on which lawn care tools it would be wise to purchase and which ones you could get by with just renting.

Lawn mower – While this may seem like an obvious answer, it is still worth mentioning you should purchase your own lawn mower. A lawn mower will be used consistently, probably once a week if not more. It would not be logical to rent each time you need to mow your lawn because it would be more costly in the long run. The lawn mower

Leaf blower and edgers- If you live in a place where leaf blowers are necessary, it would make much more sense to own a quality leaf blower than constantly rent one. A quality leaf blower can get expensive; however, if you are using it often, you won’t have to fork out extra money every time you need one to rent.

Snowblower – Especially those of us who experience extremely harsh winters, it would be wise to put a snowblower on your list of things to own. You are going to be using it too much to make renting a suitable option.

Trimmers – It would make more sense to own trimmers just because you will probably be using them more than once or twice, so there would really be no point in renting them every time you need trimmers. If you have neighbors who are good friends, it might be smart to ask if you can share certain tools to save money. For instance, if your neighbor has a good set of trimmers, and you have a chainsaw, you may be able to work something out as far as loaning them the chainsaw when needed if you can borrow the trimmers when you need them.

Log splitter, wood chippers, lawn dethatchers, and lawn aerators- Unless you are constantly using these, they probably fall under the category of good rental items as needed.
