Once upon a time, your garage was a squeaky clean space to park your car. Now, it’s a cluttered mess, filled with miscellaneous tools and other random items you’re not exactly sure when, or how, got in there. Needless to say, it’s time to organize your garage, but where do you begin when there’s just so much there? Follow these 5 tips to declutter and take back control of your garage.

Utilize the wall and ceiling space as much as possible

Thanks to peg boards, you no longer need to just lean all of your items against the wall and hope they stay still. Securely mount your pegboard to the walls of your garage and it will hold many of your tools: rakes, hoses, shovels, etc. These will get the tools out of your way and off the floor. You can even mount a row of shelves on the walls for non-hanging items. Helpful tip: Secure bulky items to your pegboard(s) with a bungee cord.

Before you begin your reorganizing, take everything out of your garage

If you try working on the garage with a lot of your items still inside, it will be overwhelming. Try looking at it as a blank canvas. Give yourself a clean slate and time to decide which areas of the garage are better for certain items.

Make a plan on what stays and what goes

Chances are, you’ll find items you can do without, items you didn’t even remember you had. If you do run into these items, decide what you can’t live without, and what you could donate or throw in the garbage. You’ll be so happy once you’ve cleared out the stuff you no longer need or want, and you probably won’t find yourself missing it much once you see how much space you’ve added. When in doubt, toss it in the trash or donate it. If you’re not instantly convinced you need it, you probably don’t.

Consider mounting your tool boxes

If you are a handy man or woman, you have tools everywhere. Imagine how much space you could save if you mounted your tool boxes to the wall. If you don’t have metal toolboxes, it may be worth investing in some just to be able to bolt them to your wall to free up some of your floor space.

Group your items together so you can easily find them

Like-items should always be grouped together so they can be easily found. Even if your garage is your main place of entrance where everyone puts their shoes and coats, it doesn’t necessarily have to look like a garage. With a few coats of paint, shelving, and decals, you can transform your garage into a cute little space without spending a lot of money.

Say goodbye to all of that annoying clutter in your garage and take back your control. It will be a weight lifted off of your shoulders when you can actually use your garage for its intended purposes while being organized at the same time.
