Spring is right around the corner! After a long and cold winter, most are ready for the sunshine and are ready to get mowing. But, before you get too excited you should consider getting your lawnmower ready for spring. Leaving your mower dormant all winter and taking it straight out of the shed to mow is not a good idea. You should always perform spring maintenance on your mower just like you would your car.
6 tips on how to get your lawnmower ready for spring:
- Clean the mower
- Check spark plugs
- Check fuel filters
- Check oil and fuel tank
- Sharpen blades
- Check tires
Clean the mower
First, you want to clean the mower. Remove belts and any other needed parts to get out all grass clippings and debris stuck inside the mower. Using a leaf blower is a great way to remove all of these things at a quicker pace.
Check spark plugs
Always be sure to read your owner’s manual of any equipment before operating. Doing so will help you know when to replace spark plugs. If you leave worn spark plugs in too long it can cause damage that could have been prevented.
Check fuel filters
Just like your vehicle, leaving fuel filters in too long hurts your fuel economy. Change out your fuel filters as recommended by the manufacturer.
Check oil and fuel tank
Don’t forget to change your oil and oil filter on a regular basis. This will help your mower to keep running smoothly. Also, don’t keep unused gas in your mower for more than 30 days. Keep your fuel tank filled with new gas.
Sharpen blades
If you want your grass cut right the first time, don’t forget to get your blades sharpened. Keep an extra pair of sharp blades on hand is also a good idea that will save you time. Mowing with dull blades in the end just hurts your mower and grass. Schedule an appointment with a professional blade sharpener if you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself.
Check tires
Before mowing, always check your tires for leaks and punctures. You don’t want to be in the middle of mowing your yard and run into a problem that could have been prevented had you took the extra time.
