Just like anything else, your mower needs a little TLC. It is important that you maintain your mower so that when it’s time to cut the grass you are spending your time trying to get your mower to work or wonder why it isn’t cutting like it did when you first bought it. Your mower is a machine and that means it needs a little preventive maintenance now and again. In order for your small issues not to turn into big issues, we have put together a list of things that need to be done to make sure your lawn mower is running like new!
Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips
- Oil change
- Filter replacement
- Sharpen blades
- Clean out the deck
- Replace old belts
Oil change
Be aware of how frequently you mow. Normally oil changes are needed every three months but could be more dependent on mileage. Just like your car, you don’t want to ruin your engine in your mower.
Filter replacement
Did you know that the dirtier your air filter the more gasoline you use? It’s true! The cleaner the air filter the less gas you use and that’s the goal. Be sure to replace your air filter at the beginning of mowing season and check it again sometime in the middle.
Sharpen blades
In order for your mower to get a clean cut, your mower’s blade needs to be sharp. Just like filter replacement, it is recommended that you sharpen your blade at the beginning and middle of mowing season to get the best cut.
Clean out the deck
Did you know that when grass clippings build up under the deck of the mower that they hold moisture? This moisture can then lead to rust. That is why it’s so important to clean your mower and not just let it be.
Replace old belts
You want to make sure that your mower is always operating at its max potential, and that’s why you must check on your mowers belts. Any belts that are in less than new condition (thin, frayed, or simply broke) will prevent your mower from doing its best.
