Selecting a lawn mower may seem like a fairly simple process, but there are some key considerations you should understand before making the purchase. After all, the last thing you want to do is make a mistake that’s either going to be costly, make mowing more time consuming than it needs to be, or result in a poorly manicured lawn.
Essentially, there are three things to consider:
- The amount of lawn you mow
- Your physical ability
- The investment you want to make
Basically, there are three types of mowers: Walk behind, tractor style or zero-turn riders. The cost can be anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to several thousand, and it’s important you make the right selection.
Here’s some information to help you decide which lawn mower is right for you:
- If your lawn is less than a quarter acre, a walk behind mower is a good idea. A self-propelled mower will make the job easier, especially on a hilly lawn. With either a push or self-propelled mower, you’ll have the added bonus of a good cardiovascular workout. Also, walk-behind mowers give lawns a more manicured appearance.
The most popular walk mowers are gas-powered, though electric and battery-operated mowers are offered and are quieter, lighter and environmentally friendly. - If your lawn is large, you want to consider a ride-on mower, a tractor or zero turn style. If you mow a large lawn and have a lot of obstacles, a zero turn mower is a good idea. A zero turn cuts mowing time and mows closer around trees and beds eliminating most of your trimming allowing you more leisure time.
They offer either hydrostatic, pump driven or integrated transmission and a range of decks, stamped or fabricated with widths from 30 to 72 inches. When choosing the size of deck you will need to consider the tighter parts of your lawn and get a deck that will cover more area. Larger zero-turn mowers offer roll-over protection and seat belts. Some zero turns also offer catchers/baggers, mulching kits, hitches and plows to help with all your lawn and property needs. - A garden tractor is a good option if you have hills or have use for ground engaging attachments to pull a trailer and want to do more than mow grass. Tractors are also available in a variety of deck sizes and transmission styles. The decks offer side and rear discharge and are built for work in both your lawn and garden with attachments of assorted types available. The garden tractor will require you to do more trimming.
Both tractors and zero turns offer a variety of transmissions, engines and deck sizes as well as accessories.
